Grades two to six in English

At Kinderville Private School, students follow a bilingual program that begins in the second year of the first cycle. The students are set in an English environment for half a day on a daily basis. The majority of our students are francophone; therefore English is their second language. Our English program, however, is not an ESL (English as a Second Language) program, but an English Language Arts program that follows the same governmental guidelines as other English schools in Quebec. We modify and enrich our program to fit our students’ needs. Our primary goal is to have the students reach the objectives as they learn a new language and/or perfect their English skills.

Kinderville elementary teachers incorporate a number of strategies in an effort to offer an inclusive English program. An important goal is to foster in students a sense of independence and control in their own learning process. By cultivating an attitude of autonomy and self sufficiency, we instill in our students a sense of pride and confidence and encourage them to believe in their potential and subsequent accomplishments.

We believe that group work is an essential component of the learning process. In addition to academic skills, students gain social skills through cooperative learning groups. This is imperative if they are to function successfully in society. Students are exposed to an exchange of ideas; respect for opposing views as well as tolerance for one another is promoted.

Group activities are a regular component of school life and teachers monitor and enforce good quality “leader-follower” group interactions. In accordance with the Reform, teachers use thematic units to teach a cohesive, in-depth study of a topic. Students practice and apply their skills in meaningful contexts. As a result, they tend to learn and retain more. Developing a love for reading is one of our priorities. We believe that being exposed to various kinds of literature, combined with instruction in both phonics and reading strategies, make successful readers. We also believe confident readers make adventurous writers. Students can explore their many writing talents in a variety of learning experiences such as research projects, fairy tales, biographical sketches, and poems, to name a few. In the students’ writing process, methods such as proof-reading and peer-editing are stressed.

These skills are then transferred and refined in other areas of the curriculum. Science, social studies, computer technology, and art are all taught in English, allowing the students more opportunity to exercise the language in an authentic and meaningful manner. The science program combines theory with hands-on experiments both inside and outside of the classroom. Questions inspire scientific inquiry and students are encouraged to form hypotheses about how their world functions. The social studies program focuses on creating awareness of the students’ surroundings.

Through history, geography, and cultural studies, students become familiar with the people and the world they live in. Computer technology introduces students to basic typing, researching on the Internet and using e-mail. Furthermore, values such as respect, tolerance, and responsibility are both promoted and encouraged in and outside of the classroom.

We look forward to meeting your child
